WeChat Guide for Foreigners: What You Will Learn
WeChat only began to make sense to me when I saw how Sunny used it in everyday life.
One minute we were exchanging voice messages. The next she was paying for something, scanning a restaurant menu, following a business or opening a service without leaving the app.
That was when I realised that calling WeChat (微信, Wēixìn) “China’s WhatsApp” misses most of the story.
WeChat is where conversations, payments, social updates and everyday services meet. If you are travelling to China, communicating with Chinese friends or learning Mandarin, becoming comfortable with it can remove a surprising amount of stress.
This WeChat guide for foreigners explains how to create an account, complete verification, use WeChat Pay (微信支付, Wēixìn Zhīfù), scan QR codes safely and handle the features you are most likely to need in China.
Important: WeChat menus, payment eligibility, fees and verification checks can vary by country, device, account and app version. Set everything up before you travel and follow the instructions shown in your own app.
What Is WeChat?
WeChat was launched by Tencent in 2011. Tencent reported that the combined number of monthly active users of Weixin and WeChat had passed 1.4 billion by the end of the first quarter of 2026.
People outside Mainland China normally call the app WeChat. In Mainland China, you will also see the name Weixin (微信, Wēixìn), particularly in official references to Weixin Pay.
At its simplest, WeChat combines several types of service:
- individual and group messaging
- voice messages and video calls
- Moments (朋友圈, péngyouquān), its social feed
- WeChat Pay (微信支付, Wēixìn Zhīfù)
- Official Accounts (公众号, gōngzhònghào)
- Mini Programs (小程序, xiǎochéngxù)
- Channels (视频号, shìpínhào) for videos and livestreams
This is why WeChat feels so different from an ordinary messaging app. A restaurant, hotel, museum, shop or tour guide may use the same app to communicate with you, take a payment and provide a digital service.
What to Prepare Before You Start
You can register with an international mobile number. You do not normally need a Chinese SIM card simply to create an account.
Have these ready:
- a mobile number you expect to keep
- access to SMS messages
- a strong, unique password
- your passport if you plan to activate payments
- an eligible international credit or debit card
- a Chinese friend or existing WeChat user who may be able to help if friend verification is requested
Use the official app from Tencent. Avoid modified versions and unofficial download sites.
How to Set Up WeChat
1. Download the Official App
Download WeChat from the Apple App Store, Google Play or the official WeChat website.
Open the app and select Sign Up.
2. Register With Your Mobile Number
Select the correct country or region, then enter your mobile number and the other requested details.
Use your real number rather than a disposable online number. Your phone number is important for security and account recovery, so keep it active if possible.
3. Complete the Security Check
WeChat may ask you to:
- enter an SMS verification code
- complete a CAPTCHA or puzzle
- accept its terms and privacy notice
- complete an additional account-security check
The exact process is not identical for every user.
4. Complete Friend Verification if Requested
Some new accounts are asked to have an existing user help verify the registration. This can surprise foreign users, but it does not necessarily mean that anything is wrong.
The app will explain what the assisting user must do. Eligibility rules can apply, so not every account will be able to verify you.
If possible, complete this step before travelling. A Chinese friend, family member, colleague, teacher or trusted language partner may be able to help.
Do not pay strangers online to “unlock” or verify an account. It creates a security risk and may expose you to scams.
5. Choose Your WeChat ID Carefully
Your WeChat ID is different from your display name. Other people may use it to find you, and WeChat limits how frequently it can be changed.
Choose something that you will be comfortable sharing with friends, teachers and professional contacts.
6. Add a Recognisable Profile
Add a display name and profile photo that people will recognise.
This is especially helpful when you exchange QR codes with someone you have just met. A blank or unfamiliar profile is much easier to ignore by mistake.
7. Review Privacy and Security
Open Me → Settings and review the privacy, account-security and notification options available on your version of the app.
Pay particular attention to:
- how people can find and add you
- who can see your Moments
- whether your mobile number can be used to find you
- device and login management
- payment verification
Protect your phone with a PIN, Face ID or fingerprint security. Never share SMS codes, passwords or payment codes with anyone.
How to Add Friends on WeChat
The most common method is to scan a personal QR code.
Tap the + symbol near the top of the app and select Scan (扫一扫, sǎo yì sǎo). Ask the other person to display their WeChat QR code, scan it and send a friend request.
Depending on privacy settings, you may also be able to add someone using:
- their WeChat ID
- their mobile number
- a shared contact card
- a group chat
Your own QR code is normally available from your profile area. Exchanging WeChat QR codes is often more natural in China than exchanging phone numbers.
Two useful phrases are:
我扫你。 (Wǒ sǎo nǐ.) — I’ll scan yours.
你扫我吧。 (Nǐ sǎo wǒ ba.) — You can scan mine.
The WeChat Features You Will Use Most
Chats and Voice Messages
WeChat supports text, images, files, voice messages, voice calls and video calls.
Voice messages are especially common. At first, they can feel difficult if you are learning Mandarin because you cannot skim them like written text. However, they are also valuable listening practice.
Long-press a message to see options such as translation, forwarding, saving or replying. The available options depend on the message type and app version.
Group Chats
Groups are used for families, workplaces, classes, tours, apartment buildings and social events.
Save the group to your contacts if it is important. Otherwise, it can be difficult to find again after the conversation becomes quiet.
Group QR codes may expire or stop accepting new members, so join important groups when you receive the invitation.
Moments
Moments (朋友圈, péngyouquān) is WeChat’s social feed. Friends can share photos, short posts and links.
You can control who sees your posts and whose posts appear in your feed. Check those settings before sharing personal travel details or family photographs.
Official Accounts
Official Accounts (公众号, gōngzhònghào) are used by businesses, media organisations, schools, museums and public services.
Following one may give you access to opening hours, customer support, booking information, announcements or discounts.
Mini Programs
Mini Programs (小程序, xiǎochéngxù) are small services that open inside WeChat. You do not install them in the same way as ordinary phone apps.
They can be used to:
- order food
- reserve tickets
- call a car
- hire a shared bicycle
- access a restaurant menu
- book an appointment
- use local transport services
- interact with a hotel, attraction or business
Some Mini Programs are designed mainly for Chinese residents and may require a Chinese number, local identification or a Chinese bank account. Do not assume every Mini Program will work with a foreign account.
How to Set Up WeChat Pay as a Foreigner
Foreign visitors can link eligible international credit and debit cards to WeChat Pay for merchant purchases in Mainland China. The supported card, country and verification requirements depend on your issuing bank and the current WeChat rules.
Before beginning, prepare:
- your passport or other accepted identification
- an eligible international card
- the billing details registered with that card
- access to your bank’s SMS or banking app
1. Open the Payment Area
The usual route is:
Me → Services → Wallet → Cards
You may instead see Money, Bank Cards or Add a Card. If the payment section is missing, update the app and check the tools available under Me → Settings → General.
2. Add Your Card
Enter the card information requested by the app. Your name should match the name used for identity verification and the cardholder information held by your bank.
Eligible cards may include major international credit and debit card networks. A supported card can still be rejected by its issuing bank, so it is sensible to prepare a second card from another bank or network.
3. Complete Identity Verification
WeChat Pay may ask for your:
- full legal name
- nationality
- date of birth
- passport number
- passport photograph
Enter the details exactly as they appear on your passport. Even a different name order or missing middle name can cause problems.
4. Confirm the Card
Your bank may require an SMS code, app approval or another security check.
If the card is declined during setup, contact the bank and explain that you are linking it to a Chinese mobile-payment service. Do not repeatedly submit the same failed request in a short period, as this may trigger additional security checks.
5. Set Up Payment Security
Follow the prompts to create any required payment password and enable biometric approval if it is offered.
Your WeChat login password and payment credentials are not the same thing. Keep both private.
How to Pay With WeChat
There are two main payment methods.
Scan the Merchant’s Code
At a small shop, café or market stall, the merchant may display a QR code.
- Open Scan (扫一扫, sǎo yì sǎo).
- Scan the merchant’s code.
- Enter the amount if required.
- Check the merchant name and amount carefully.
- Confirm the payment.
Never rely only on what someone says the amount should be. Read the number shown on your screen before approving it.
Show Your Payment Code
In a supermarket, larger shop or staffed ticket counter, the cashier may scan your code.
Open the payment area and display your payment code only when you are ready to pay. Do not photograph it or send it to another person.
After payment, check that the app shows a successful transaction before walking away.
Useful Mandarin includes:
可以用微信支付吗？ (Kěyǐ yòng Wēixìn Zhīfù ma?) — Can I pay with WeChat?
我扫这个码吗？ (Wǒ sǎo zhège mǎ ma?) — Do I scan this code?
支付成功了吗？ (Zhīfù chénggōng le ma?) — Did the payment go through?
Foreign-Card Fees, Limits and Restrictions
This is the part many older guides get wrong because the rules have changed several times.
International cards linked to WeChat Pay are primarily intended for purchases from merchants in Mainland China. They may not support person-to-person transfers, wallet top-ups or digital Red Envelopes (红包, hóngbāo).
Transaction limits also apply. The amount available to you can depend on identity verification, the card issuer, the merchant and WeChat’s current risk controls. Check the limits shown inside your own Wallet rather than relying on an old figure from a travel blog.
International-card service fees can apply to larger transactions. Tencent has generally waived the fee on individual purchases of RMB 200 or less and has also offered temporary promotions for new international-card users.
As of August 2026, Tencent says qualifying first-time users who link an international card can receive a 90-day waiver of the 3% international-card processing fee on daily spending of up to RMB 1,000. Promotions and conditions can change, so always check the fee displayed before confirming a payment.
Your bank may still charge its own foreign-exchange or international-transaction fee even when WeChat does not add a service fee.
Why a WeChat Payment May Fail
A card can be linked successfully and still fail at the point of sale.
Common causes include:
- the bank blocking an overseas or unusual transaction
- incomplete identity verification
- a mismatch between your passport and card details
- the merchant or purchase type not supporting a foreign-linked card
- the transaction exceeding an account or issuer limit
- a weak internet connection
- automated security controls
If a payment fails, try a different eligible card or use Alipay, a physical bank card or cash. Contact your bank if it appears to be declining the transaction.
Do not let your phone battery become your only access to money. Carry a backup payment method.
WeChat Pay or Alipay?
For most visitors, the best answer is to prepare both.
WeChat is stronger as an all-purpose communication app. It is useful for messaging people, joining groups, following businesses and using Mini Programs as well as paying.
Alipay (支付宝, Zhīfùbǎo) is more strongly centred on payments and travel services. Some foreign visitors find particular transport, booking or payment functions easier there.
You do not need to choose one permanently. If one payment is rejected, the other can be a valuable backup.
China’s official payment guidance also confirms that foreign visitors can use bank cards and RMB cash. Mobile payment is convenient, but it should not be your only plan.
QR Codes in Everyday Life
QR codes are everywhere in China, but not every code is simply a payment code.
Scanning one may:
- add a WeChat contact
- open a restaurant menu
- launch a Mini Program
- follow an Official Account
- register for an event
- rent a bicycle or power bank
- open a payment page
- provide visitor information
This can feel confusing at first. After a few days, it becomes normal.
Scan Safely
Use the same care you would use with an unfamiliar web link.
- Check whether another sticker has been placed over the original code.
- Confirm the merchant name before paying.
- Read the amount before approving a transaction.
- Be suspicious of unknown codes promising prizes or refunds.
- Do not enter passport, banking or verification details unless you understand why they are required.
- Never share SMS codes or payment passwords.
If something looks wrong, ask a staff member rather than continuing.
Using WeChat to Practise Mandarin
WeChat became one of my most useful Mandarin tools because it showed me the language people actually use with friends and family.
It can help you practise in several ways.
Listen to Voice Messages More Than Once
Replay short messages and listen for the words you already know. Then compare your understanding with the conversation around them.
Use Translation as Support
Long-press a text message and select the translation option when available.
The translation can help with the general meaning, but it may struggle with slang, abbreviations, dialect and humour. Treat it as assistance rather than a perfect answer.
Type Short, Natural Messages
Start with useful everyday phrases instead of long paragraphs:
到家了吗？ (Dào jiā le ma?) — Are you home?
吃饭了吗？ (Chīfàn le ma?) — Have you eaten?
我马上到。 (Wǒ mǎshàng dào.) — I’ll be there soon.
好的，没问题。 (Hǎo de, méi wèntí.) — Okay, no problem.
晚点聊。 (Wǎndiǎn liáo.) — Talk later.
Learn From Moments
Moments exposes you to short captions, everyday vocabulary and the way people respond casually.
Do not worry if you understand only part of a post. Recognising a few words in genuine communication is still useful progress.

Common Problems and What to Do
The SMS Code Does Not Arrive
Check the country code and phone number, confirm that your phone can receive international messages and wait before requesting another code.
Repeated requests can sometimes delay the process rather than speed it up.
WeChat Requests Friend Verification
Follow the instructions shown in the app and ask a trusted eligible user for help. Do not use paid verification services advertised online.
The Payment Section Is Missing
Update WeChat and look under Me → Services or the available tools under Settings → General. The location and availability may vary by account region and app version.
My Card Will Not Link
Check that your legal name matches your passport and card records. Confirm with your bank that the card allows international online transactions, then try another eligible card if necessary.
My Account Is Restricted
Follow the recovery instructions displayed inside WeChat or use the official WeChat Help Centre.
Avoid websites or social-media accounts claiming they can bypass WeChat’s security controls.
I Am Changing Phones
WeChat chat history is handled differently from many messaging apps. Before changing devices, use WeChat’s chat migration or computer backup tools if the conversations matter to you.
Confirm that important photographs, documents and travel information have transferred before wiping the old phone.
Privacy and Account Safety
Treat WeChat as both a communication account and, if payments are enabled, a financial account.
- Use a unique password.
- Keep your registered phone number current.
- Review logged-in devices.
- Lock your phone and protect payment approval.
- Do not send passport images, bank details or verification codes in ordinary chats unless there is a clear and trusted reason.
- Review the audience before posting to Moments.
- Remove access from old devices you no longer use.
WeChat also does not change the availability of unrelated websites and apps in China. Check what communication, mapping and travel services you will need before departure and follow the laws and rules that apply where you travel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can foreigners create a WeChat account?
Yes. Foreign users can normally register with an international mobile number. Some registrations require additional security or friend verification.
Do I need a Chinese phone number?
Not simply to register. A Chinese number may make some local services more convenient, but international numbers are supported for account registration.
Can foreigners use WeChat Pay?
Yes. Eligible foreign users can link supported international credit or debit cards and use them for merchant purchases in Mainland China after completing the required verification.
Can I send money or Red Envelopes with a foreign card?
Do not assume so. International-card support is mainly designed for purchases. Transfers, wallet top-ups and Red Envelopes may be unavailable without a supported Mainland Chinese payment method.
Should I install Alipay as well?
Yes. Having both gives you a useful backup when a card, merchant or service does not work through one of the apps.
Is cash still useful in China?
Yes. Mobile payments are extremely convenient, but RMB cash and physical cards remain useful backups. Carry some cash in case your phone, internet connection or linked card fails.
Can WeChat help me learn Mandarin?
It is excellent for practising with real messages, voice notes and everyday vocabulary. However, it works best alongside structured study that teaches pronunciation, tones and sentence patterns.
Final Thoughts
Before I used WeChat regularly, I thought it was simply another chat app. Watching Sunny use it showed me how much of Chinese daily life can pass through one screen.
The app can look crowded when you first open it, but you do not need to master everything at once.
Start with four things:
- Create and secure your account.
- Add one trusted contact.
- Learn how to scan and show QR codes.
- Set up WeChat Pay and a backup payment method before travelling.
Once those basics are working, the rest becomes easier through use.
WeChat can also give your Mandarin a practical purpose. A short voice message, a restaurant menu or a simple exchange with a friend turns the language from something in a lesson into something you genuinely need.
