I have spent years learning Mandarin as an adult. I have used apps, online courses, YouTube videos, textbooks, language exchanges, private tutors and real conversations with native Chinese speakers.
I have made plenty of mistakes along the way. One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that different tools are valuable at different stages of the journey.

My Recommendation: Use Both Strategically
People often assume they have to choose one option and reject the other.
I do not think that is necessary.
If I were beginning again, I would use Rocket Chinese to build a structured foundation. I would work through the audio, pronunciation, grammar and character material regularly rather than jumping between unrelated resources.
I would also consider occasional tutoring from the beginning for tone and pronunciation checks. Once I could hold a basic conversation, I would make tutoring a larger part of my routine.
I would then add:
- language-exchange partners
- occasional or regular tutoring sessions
- conversations with native speakers
- Chinese podcasts, television and other native material
Rocket Chinese can build the foundation.
Real people help bring the language to life.
My Personal Verdict
If I lost access to all my Mandarin resources tomorrow and had to begin again, Rocket Chinese would be one of the first things I would buy.
Not because it is perfect. Nothing is.
I would choose it because it gives beginners something they desperately need:
